What is excavator quick coupler?

A quick coupler also called quick hitch, it is a heavy-duty industrial component that allows for the fast and efficient changing of buckets and attachments on industrial machines. Without a quick coupler, workers are required to manually drive out attachments, typically using a hammer.

Quick coupler handy hydraulic devices that conveniently connect buckets to an excavator arm, are becoming standard equipment on many manufacturers’ excavators and are a popular aftermarket add-on. The couplers come in several designs and all offer the same conveniences: simple connections that many times allow the operator to stay in the cab, faster switch out times, and the ability to accommodate various manufacturers’ attachments.

The quick coupler goes between the excavator and the bucket, making it easier to replace the equipment. Thanks to this tool, installing and removing the bucket on and from the excavator’s arm is faster, increasing work efficiency.

What is the difference between quick coupler?

For excavation projects that require different kinds of excavator attachments, the site superintendent has three options: To use multiple attachments for one equipment (excavator) with a manual attachment to rent or buy two separate attachments. A hydraulic quick coupler is a device that allows the operator to switch back and forth between buckets and attachments without even having to leave the cab.

While manual quick coupler may initially be less expensive, manually replacing buckets and attachments can dramatically increase downtime and ultimately reduce costs. It can take two operators / technicians up to an hour to replace a bucket on an excavator with a sledgehammer, increasing labor costs.

Manually changing accessories requires eliminating bolts and pins which can often be warped, warped or rusted, causing more problems for the process, including safety hazards and potential damage to the machine. Some construction sites opt for two machines with separate accessories rather than settle for the additional downtime of having to replace them manually. While this can increase site efficiency, the additional cost of renting or buying and maintaining a second machine can be an unnecessary impact on the project budget. Using a hydraulic quick coupler is increasingly becoming the most popular method of replacing accessories at work.

What to look for when using quick coupler?

For construction contractors, equipment dealers and manufacturers, safety should be our number one responsibility. The protection of our employees and customers is non-negotiable and must be the number one priority in our decision making.

Buckets fall from machines every day around the world causing serious injury and even death. From our experiences we have found that there are three main reasons why buckets accidentally fall off excavators when using a non-compliant ISO 13031 quick coupler:

1. Wrong connection

If a quick coupler without front lock is used and an incorrect connection occurs (the operator does not secure the bucket correctly), the bucket may fall off the quick coupler at the start of operations.

2. Cylinder failure / hydraulic pressure loss

If a quick coupler that relies on hydraulic pressure is used to engage the attachment and the quick coupler loses hydraulic pressure due to a cylinder leak or failure, the coupler system can gradually open causing the bucket to drop unexpectedly during operations.

3. Accidental opening of a quick coupler in an unsafe location

Using a quick coupler with a control system that allows a quick coupler to open in any position or orientation can result in a bucket being unintentionally released into a dangerous position, causing the bucket to fall.

The development of safety standards related to quick couplers, such as ISO 13031 Earth Moving Machinery - Quick Couplings - Safety, was a game changer in the global construction industry.
